In recent years, advances in medical imaging and diagnostics enabled minimally invasive procedures to be implemented in a variety of surgical applications. Minimally invasive procedures have several benefits for the patient such as reduced morbidity, and better quality of life. Despite the many advantages for the patient, these procedures present several challenges for the surgeon. As the surgical view is displayed on a monitor problems like lack of depth perception, limited instrument maneuvering and reduced orientation are perceived.
In our team, physicists, engineers, technical physicists and clinicians work together to develop and implement surgical navigation systems to improve minimally invasive procedures. In this project a new navigation system for laparoscopic procedures is developed. Particular focus will be employed on the development of new laparoscope equipped with depth sensing capabilities. This will enable to merge different medical images (e.g. preoperative scans, laparoscopic videos, ultrasounds) in an augmented reality fashion.
By developing such system, we expect to improve depth perception and reduce the number of complications. The navigation system will be developed within a team of different researchers with heterogeneous backgrounds and skills. You will develop optical systems for laparoscopes and methods for 3D reconstruction based on computer vision. These methods will be developed in close collaboration with clinical partners and evaluated in clinical settings from the early stages of the developments.
As a research group within the Surgical Oncology division of the Netherlands Cancer Institute/Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek hospital, we have a strong collaboration with technical universities, university hospitals and the medical industry. You will be appointed at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam and you will follow the PhD program of the University of Twente.
You are a team player and have a strong interest in research with a clinical impact and the implementation of technology in medical practice. Because you work in an international environment, you must have a good command of English and preferably Dutch.
You have completed a master’s in engineering, physics, computer science or a similar study. You have a strong background in optics, image processing/medical imaging. Knowledge in programming/code development, clinical practice, medical devices is desirable.
